- April 9, 2010: Spawn - new work by Carla Knopp
April 9, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Harrison Center presents "Spawn" - new work by Carla Knopp with an artist reception Friday, April 9 from 6 to 9pm. Knopp is an exploratory painter from the Midwest. Her work reflects a dually-focused purpose. She seeks artistic revelation from both personally-derived expressionism and from formal experimentation. These two impulses guide her work, either separately or in tandem, and form a portfolio of work which embraces both mystical imagery and abstraction. Carla holds a BFA (1984) from Herron School of Art, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, with a major in painting, and a minor in photography and art history. She has worked as a studio artist for 25 years, showing her work in both juried and invitational exhibitions.

- May 1, 2009: The Harrison Center presents Garden Party
May 1, 2009
Indianapolis, IN – The Harrison Center, Becker Landscape and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful present Garden Party – an artist reception and open studio night.
In the Harrison Gallery, Topple - an exhibition of works on paper by Cheryl Paswater. Paswater, a former Harrison Center artist, returns from New York, where she now resides, for this solo show. Best known for large-scale oil paintings and works on paper that feature an ever-shifting vocabulary of color and quasi-abstract shapes, Paswater has exhibited at the Pratt Institute, Artists Space, Cannonball Press, the Harrison Center and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Of her recent work, Paswater says, “I have been inventing a lexicon of quasi-abstract forms that inhabit an interstitial realm halfway between real and imaginary worlds. Reminiscent in part of actual objects but pulled back to abstraction through a lack of reference to a figure ground, these shapes combine and recombine to create a visual banter that can be, at turns, both comical and uncanny.”
In Gallery No. 2 – Souvenirs & Shiny Things – Souvenirs & Shiny Things is a fanciful indoor Central Park created by New York artist and musician, Annie Quick. Quick says about the project, “I love the way that Central Park is made-up nature. Every rock and tree is specially planned and brought in. I wanted to take it a step further and make a park out of totally made up and found objects. It’s part of how I see the Park – a magical place, made just for you – always surprising and giving you secret gifts.” The night of the opening, you can grab a seat on the freshly sodded gallery floor and enjoy a concert by Quick as well.
In the Courtyard – Keep Indianapolis Beautiful – Grab a shovel and be a part of this performance art piece as Keep Indianapolis Beautiful beautifies the Harrison Center Courtyard with plantings and more!
In Hank & Dolly’s Gallery – THIS SIDE UP - new work by Michael Altman
Throughout the building – The Yarnburners’ knitting graffiti gang members “vandalize” the Harrison Center with their spun tags.
In the Gymnasium – Back by popular demand - Indy Contra returns this month with contra dancing. (Free lessons at 6:00 and 7:30)
Also that night, wander the Harrison Center ’s 21 artist studios. Harrison Center studio artists: Allison Ford, Maren Bell, Lara Lord, Amy Falstrom, Atsu Kpotufe, Elizabeth Guipe Hall, Kyle Herrington, Lisa Fett, Shannon Hinkle, Toni Hook, Mary Beth Jackson, Matt Kenyon, Carl Leck, Kim Lohr, Tyler Meuninck, Elizabeth Nelson, Kipp Normand, Jude Odell, Emma Overman, Quincy Owens, Kyle Ragsdale, William A. Rasdell, Amy Reel, Artur Silva, Carolyn Springer and Shadi Zakhour.

- March 3, 2009: The Harrison Center presents Mind the Gap.
March 3, 2009
Indianapolis, IN – The Harrison Center brings together entrepreneurial artists and educators in the new exhibit, Mind the Gap. This group show creates a public conversation relating to the education achievement gap and includes the work of Herron School of Art's faculty members Anila Agha, Flounder Lee, Jennie Mynhier and Lesley Baker and the Harrison Center’s Artur Silva. Just as the educational issues surrounding the achievement gap will require new and innovative solutions, these five artists will explore new ways to communicate these issues. The work in this show was created to address problems facing Indianapolis with art made specifically for this time and place, but the topics explored are relevant to cities all over the country.
In order to bring further awareness to this timely issue, two of the artists will create work to be displayed off-site – a first for theHarrison Center. A mural by Artur Silva will be on display at IPL's headquarters in the window facing Monument Circle and the work of Flounder Lee will be featured in the Market Street window of Brenner Design.
Across from the gallery: Learn more about the work of The Mind Trust’s Education Entrepreneur Fellows. Fellowship projects represented include the Youth Music Exchange (Dr. Michael Bitz), Teach Plus (Dr. Celine Coggins), Summer Advantage USA (Mr. Earl Martin Phalen) and Global Citizen Year (Ms. Abigail Falik).

- February 6, 2009: The Harrison Center presents Harrison, Kleeman & Miller
February 6, 2009
Indianapolis, IN – The Harrison Center pairs art and law in a new exhibit, Harrison, Kleeman & Miller. The evening begins with a pre-reception and continuing legal education (CLE) session at 5pm on art and law led by local attorney, Sally Zweig of Katz & Korin. This session, sponsored by Rule1.1, is free and geared toward attorneys seeking CLE credit, but is open to the public as well.
The evening continues at 6pm in the Harrison Gallery with Harrison, Kleeman & Miller. Artists David Kleeman and Mark Alan Miller together make a strong case for art. Kleeman’s art defends the odd and the strange, brings light to the exotic and crazed. Miller’s art searches for clues to create a case for his objects’ importance and value in a used up world.
In Gallery No. 2 - Cargo – new work by Toni Hook. An exhibit of over 20 paintings using shipping pallets as the canvas. The raw material paired with characteristically American images reflect an unrefined America. Through bold colors and aggressive brushwork, people and ideas become the freight.
In Hank & Dolly’s Gallery – Magnetic Aesthetic – new work by Tre Reising. This work embodies Reising’s investigation of the relationship between paintings and drawings and sculpture. The paintings are reminiscent of playgrounds and are composed of materials that range from industrial building supplies to yarn.
Across from the Gallery at 8pm – Nathanael Henley (Orangehaus Records) performs.
The artwork hangs through February 28th.
