The Painter and The Potter

For the month of February, the Speck Gallery is showing an exhibit by married artists Megan and Corey Jefferson. This creative couple uses their unique talents to create works that evoke different aspects of nature. The paintings and ceramic pieces in this exhibit build upon and complement each other as they invite us as viewers to appreciate the world around us.

Megan Jefferson, Chroma Serenity, oil on canvas.

Megan’s paintings are soft and delicate, with each brushstroke carefully placed just so. There are layers to each painting, where she has blurred the background or cropped the branches and flower stems to guide the viewer through each painting, inviting us to look deeply and slowly. The colors are bright and command attention while also capturing an ephemerality reminiscent of catching a glimpse of wildflowers in springtime. Each piece creates a moment for the viewer to take a break from the fast-paced materiality of everyday life and take a breath.

Corey Jefferson, Bowls and Vessels, ceramic & glaze.

In contrast to the delicate flowers and branches of Megan’s paintings, Corey’s ceramic pieces remind one of the tactile nature of the earth beneath. The organic forms and emphasis on the clay’s natural charms remind the viewer of the hands that made them and the natural elements used to complete them. From the soft curves and lines to his choice of glazes, Corey’s pieces, deemed “baskets” and “vases,” invite us to contemplate and appreciate the beauty of the earth underneath the landscape.

Through experiencing this show in person, viewers can see how nicely these two distinct art forms go together by highlighting different aspects of nature. If you want to be whisked away to the serenity of a warm spring day, this show is for you.

The show can be viewed anytime during the month of February in the Speck Gallery during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through March.
