Sarah Anderson’s collection of ceramic wall hangings is on display in the City Gallery for the month of November. Anderson is an artist with a BFA in sculpture that is venturing into new territory by shifting away from functional ceramics and creating decorative wall hangings depicting playful characters from her imagination.
The title of Anderson’s show, Where We Find Joy, stems from Anderson making shifts in her life and work to focus on what she is passionate about. When the pandemic hit, Anderson decided to renovate a camper that she now lives out of and travels around the country teaching ceramics classes and sharing her work. Pursuing travel and art is at the core of what brings Anderson joy.

The imagery Anderson utilized in her work used to have a focus on the pain in her life, specifically her battle with health issues. However, Anderson now uses humor as a central theme in her work. “I wanted to make stuff that I like, that is happy and has bright colors.” Says Anderson.
Anderson uses a carving technique called sgraffito to depict gestural characters such as frogs, rats, mushrooms, and cows. “I didn’t start out doing characters, it just sort of happened, and I leaned into it.” Says Anderson. The characters are a nod back to Anderson’s childhood, in which she and her brother would make up funky comics. This exhibit brings viewers into the whimsical world of Anderson’s imagination and is an overall celebration of what brings us joy.
