This mural, located at 1811 N Meridian St, right across from the Red Line Stop, is a project I’m thrilled to share with bus riders, neighbors, and everyone passing by.
The inspiration began with the building owners at Jimmy's Nail Salon, who loved the idea of incorporating a skyline. I was also captivated by the salon’s beautifully organized nail polish colors—especially the soft gradients of purples and pinks, which I felt were perfect for the mural’s color palette.
The piece captures a view of the Indianapolis skyline from a rural vantage point, framed by Milkweed at sunset, with city lights just beginning to twinkle in the distance.
This mural provided a wonderful opportunity to expand the depth-of-field techniques I’ve been working on at my easel to a larger scale. The composition has a layered depth, with the distant city skyline, a soft, atmospheric middle ground, and Milkweed in the foreground—underscoring the subtle connection between urban and rural landscapes. It’s a reminder that we’re all connected to the earth and each other, no matter where we live.
Milkweed is an essential plant for monarch butterflies, providing them with food, shelter, and a safe place to lay their eggs. Just as Milkweed supports the life cycle of these butterflies, it reminds us of the interconnectedness and support we all need in our lives.
In nature, monarchs depend on Milkweed for survival, and in our communities, we thrive when we lean on one another. This mural serves as a symbol of that connection—a reminder that, like the monarchs and Milkweed, we are all part of a larger system where each element plays a crucial role. Supporting each other creates resilience, strength, and beauty, much like the delicate relationship between Milkweed and the monarch butterfly.
