Process & Play

For the month of May, City Gallery is exhibiting JD Bills's most recent body of work, Process and Play. This work explores a range of ideas, materials, and approaches that all reflect the joy and risk of Bills's creative process.

When Bills began this body of work, he decided not to purchase any new materials, instead using only what he had on hand. This led to him using a variety of materials, such as acrylic and oil paint, canvas, wood, metal, paper, marker, and colored pencil. Setting this parameter challenged Bills to experiment, adapt, and stay open to unexpected outcomes.

"This current body of work differs from my previous showcases in that it doesn't follow a single theme. Instead of a cohesive series tied together by common materials or concepts, this collection is more spontaneous—each piece stands on its own, without the need to relate directly to the others." Says Bills.

"That freedom gave me space to experiment with different materials, techniques, and ideas I've been wanting to explore. Some works are bold and layered, others more minimal or process-driven. It reflects how I work naturally—letting curiosity lead, embracing imperfections, and focusing more on the journey than the destination. This show is really about honoring play, discovery, and the many ways creativity can take shape."

At its core, Process & Play is about showing up. It's about tuning in to the creative impulse, staying open, and trusting that the act of making—without guarantees or outcomes—is enough. This collection is all about Bills exploring freely and figuring out what comes next for his art.

You can view Process & Play throughout May, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or browse our online gallery.
