Who Am I to Answer the Call?
Opening May 2 at the Harrison Center's Underground Gallery, Who Am I to Answer the Call? invites audiences into a deeply personal and imaginative space where artists explore the experience of being summoned by conscience, history, or circumstances to act. Whether in moments of quiet resistance or bold leadership, the works on display ask: What does it mean to step forward when called? And what holds us back?
Created by the 2024–2025 cohort of the Religion, Spirituality, and the Arts (RSA) program at the Herron School of Art and Design, this exhibition brings together a wide range of visual and interdisciplinary work rooted in thoughtful conversation, historical reflection, and creative inquiry. The seminar's source materials, Exodus 3 and the African American spiritual Go Down Moses are interpreted through diverse theological and cultural lenses, including Jewish, Muslim, and Christian traditions. Together, these artists explore how ancient stories of call and liberation still speak to our present realities.
At the heart of the exhibition is the tension found in the biblical moment when Moses encounters the burning bush and expresses doubt: "Who am I to go?" That hesitation, paired with the compelling urgency of Go Down Moses, a song born from the pain and hope of enslaved people, creates a layered and open-ended dialogue. The resulting work challenges viewers to consider their own call to courage, justice, and transformation, whether spiritual, social, or personal.
Who Am I to Answer the Call? is a thought-provoking experience that bridges ancient narratives with modern artistic inquiry. Visitors are encouraged to attend the opening reception on May 2, 2025, from 6:00 to 9 p.m., to engage directly with the artists and their works.
