Circle²

The Annex Gallery is featuring the work of Chris Bowman. In April of 2024, Bowman exhibited a body of work titled Encompass, which was a collection of wooden sculptures that show his technique of turning to create circular patterns on a square piece of wood. Bowman primarily makes sculptures in the form of houses or barns as well as circles. The house forms are a symbol of dwelling that Bowman has always integrated into his work. This body of work, titled Circle², is an expansion on the circles and squares represented in his past bodies of work.

"Working with wood allows opportunities to use multiple techniques. I utilize various textures, colors, and patterns with each piece.” Bowman's turning technique has evolved over time and allowed him to explore more patterns, shapes, and textures.

The title, Circle², not only nods to the shapes represented in the show but also holds personal significance to Bowman. His daughter is studying musical theatre at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City, and he feels pride in her artistic achievements.

Material and craft are central to what Bowman enjoys about making work: "I hope viewers are intrigued by the various patterns and possibilities of wood," Says Bowman.

Circle² can be viewed anytime Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm in the Annex Gallery at the Harrison Center.
