Art Teacher Vibes

This year marks 15 years of Katheryn Pourcho being an elementary school art teacher. Her show, Art Teacher Vibes, is an homage to the vibrant, quirky joys of teaching little artists.

Much like the variety of art supplies found in an art classroom closet, Pourcho has created this body of work using an eclectic mix of media ranging from painting, collage, ceramic, apparel, and video.

The show features a few collaborations with Indianapolis artists. Pourcho created a collection of mugs created with ceramicist Becca Ito, inspired by a childhood favorite story: Harold and the Purple Crayon, and partnered with the Harrison Center to create an educational video series titled "Art Class Dictionary."

Pourcho turned to her local community to bridge a gap in art education by visiting artist studios and working with musicians to create a video series to help educate her students. "Art Class Dictionary" is a series I've been dreaming about for almost a decade." Says Pourcho. "So often, as an elementary art teacher, I try to find visual examples of art studio terms and only come to find resources not intended for our youngest learners." This video series invites Pre-K to 2nd-grade students into various art studios to help explain art-related vocabulary terms.

Vibrant and eclectic, Pourcho's work stirs up the feelings of wonder, curiosity, and joy that elementary art classrooms are known to conjure. Art Teacher Vibes is on display in the City Gallery through September.
