The Art of Ambition, Layering, and Time |
In Patina, artist MJ Coyle builds paintings the way a room earns its character, layer by layer, until something that looks like it's always been there emerges.
Coyle's path to painting runs through interior design. Working on spaces that needed art at a scale or mood he couldn't find elsewhere, he started making the pieces himself, color stories pulled straight from his head and onto canvas. "If I can't find something that I'm looking for," he says, "I will make it myself." His materials range widely from piece to piece: chalk, charcoal, oil, acrylic, even coffee and a shower squeegee found their way into this body of work. Online Gallery | Blog |
Take Care: An Exhibition Based on Intentionality |
United by their love for our planet and their exploration of promoting sustainability, artists Lindsey Lord and Abby Dennis present duo exhibition, Take Care, in the Speck Gallery.
Lindsey challenges the conventional creation process by using salvaged materials such as shipping packaging and leftover remnants from her artistic practice, while Abby leans on slow, meditative processes, focusing on using natural fibers and dyes and salvaged scraps from previous projects. Together, they aim to provoke a dialogue about sustainability and inspire renewed appreciation for the delicate ecosystem we inhabit.

Making Space for Wonder: A 48-Hour Residency |
This month, the Harrison Center welcomed writer Katy Bowser Hutson and singer-songwriter Ben for concurrent creative residencies exploring the power of play, imagination, and storytelling. Inspired by the Harrison Center's spirit of curiosity, Katy continued work on her forthcoming book about play and faith, while Ben immersed himself in a 48-hour songwriting residency rooted in his love for Indianapolis and the arts. His residency culminated in a powerful performance on the Sky Deck during this past First Friday.
"The Harrison Center has the fingerprints of play all over it... these are the fruit of an arts organization playing deeply and imagining redemptively," reflects Katy. "This way of being, this posture of curiosity and invitation, is woven all through their space and work and thought. As they say, they are pre-imagining: they are making space for wonder, and it shows."
