Meet Pavel

Hello there, my name is Pavel Deakyne. I am a senior attending Covenant Christian High School. I am a French-American born and raised in Paris, France. I have only lived in America for 3 years now.

I started my own YouTube channel in 2019, toying around with my iPhone and iMovie. The content of my channel included sports clips, gaming tutorials, and highlights. In recent years, I have taught myself the basics of editing and I have found joy in taking long clips and editing them down, creating storylines that entertain and communicate emotion. I have also found joy in experimenting with new styles, sometimes making mistakes but learning from them. With each project I finish I notice that I am slowly improving my skills. What started as fun and games on YouTube became a true hobby. I realized that it was something that I found great joy in doing. Now, I wish to pursue this as a career, and this is why I am seeking a university degree in film and media, with a particular emphasis on video editing.

With the opportunity to intern at the Harrison Center, I have discovered that my interests are more oriented towards art than I might have first imagined. I have met great people here during my internship who share my interests and are eager to help me improve. The Harrison Center is an art gallery where one can immerse themselves in a unique culture. Experiencing First Fridays in the different art galleries is an opportunity to engage with a form of communication that cannot be expressed through writing or any other means.

In recent years, video has become one of the primary means of communication. Nearly every website now includes video, whether it be for marketing and promotional purposes, for news and entertainment, or for artful storytelling. What was communicated in the past through simple text in written material has now come alive with moving images. Through video, information and emotions that may not be easily communicated in text are readily portrayed. In the future, with my degree, I wish to work for a company that produces films and series for the public. My dream is to take part in the production team on a movie that will be considered a cinematic masterpiece.

Growing up in two cultures has shaped my identity. I am now a dual citizen, having experienced two different educational systems. Childhood memories come to mind as I reminisce about the place I grew up. The longer I think about it, the more I miss my city, and I realize that I might never again have the same feeling as calling that place my home. The feeling of missing my hometown is a quiet pain that sneaks up on me when I am not expecting it. In Memory of a place where hard work and perseverance are greatly rewarded, the French capital, Paris.
