Inside Kyrie Lewis's Whimsical World |
Kyrie Lewis's watercolor paintings are full of mystery, made with layered washes that take on an atmospheric quality. This exhibit, accurately titled Whimsy, invites viewers into the artist's unique worldbuilding. "I find the human form endlessly fascinating and full of storytelling possibilities," says Lewis, whose figures feel like familiar fairytale characters that are inviting you into a new world. Lewis not only imbues her paintings with a sense of whimsy but also transforms the gallery space with fabric installations, bringing the ethereal elements of her paintings into the three-dimensional space. A Love Letter to Indy's Everyday Magic |
Jason Bailey's paintings invite viewers to slow down and see the beauty that everyday life in Indianapolis offers. Titled A Closer Look, Bailey's artwork features scenes from Old Northside, Monument Circle, Fountain Square, and many other familiar places.
Whether working in the studio or en plein air, Bailey's attention to detail in his painting practice offers a deeper look at places that might otherwise go unnoticed around Indianapolis. The 18 oil paintings exhibited in A Closer Look are unified by the sense of light that Bailey seems to be chasing, using signature impasto brushstrokes to create a rich sense of atmosphere.

Community, Cats, and Culture: A 48-Hour Residency |
Harrison Center's 48-hour residency program brings creative minds from out of town to collaborate, reflect, and create in our city, carrying those ideas back home with them. We were honored to welcome back Hannah Kaminer, a 2015 resident, to reflect, write music, and perform at First Friday.
"In [my] new song 'Front Porch Scheming,' I mostly talk about the physical landscape I explored during my time in Indy. I hope... it calls for the listener to be awake so we can actually see each other as we change and grow... because we will need to. Take it from someone who's recently been through a hurricane recovery: we really, really need each other.
Coming to Indy convinced me once and for all that place-based songwriting is worth pursuing, both to celebrate triumphs and to witness struggles in the places we love."
