Indiana Plein Air Painters Association Exhibit

The Indiana Plein Air Painters Association is having its annual show in the Underground Gallery during the months of November and December. IPAPA is a group of plein air artists across Indiana that are interested in working from the landscape. IPAPA is dedicated to the education of Indiana plein air painters and their support as well as the reawakening of an appreciation for Indiana landscape based on its rich history.
IPAPA has a paint out event every month where the members meet at a location in Indiana and paint together. Donna Shortt, the IPAPA secretary and member for more than 10 years, shares what she loves about these events: “It gives artists an opportunity to paint with other people. A lot of artists work alone and this is a way for artists to get together and love what they do and share tips about their equipment with other people.”

Plein air painting is a unique art-making tradition. “It’s such a good way to observe nature and while you’re out there working for hours you absorb the weather, smells, and sounds that you don’t get when you work alone from photographs.” Says Shortt. Working from the landscape allows artists to engage with their work in a way that working in a studio doesn’t allow.
The paintings will span a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil, and gouache, as well as represent a large portion of the IPAPA artist community.
