Indy In Inches

Sun-Young Gullery's Harrison Center debut, Indy in Inches, showcases a collection of 56 miniature acrylic paintings of Indianapolis businesses and landscapes in 2" x 3" rectangles. The City Gallery celebrates local, place-based art. As a lover of coffee shops, bakeries, bookshops, and other local spots, Gullery's body of work is an homage to the city's unique businesses and landscapes.

Though originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Gullery has lived in Indianapolis since 2013. She has been an artist her entire life and began to devote herself seriously to her craft four years ago. She works mainly with watercolor, ink, and acrylic, but also creates with other media as a high school art teacher. One of the things she loves about working in miniature is that she has the flexibility and freedom to work in smaller increments throughout the day while still accomplishing her daily tasks as a mother and teacher.

Gullery's process begins with recalling some of her favorite local spots and then searching for an image that shows off the best angle of the storefront. When asked about her inspiration behind creating this exhibit, she mentioned, "Without small businesses, Indianapolis would be full of chain restaurants and department stores. The exterior storefront of each location initially draws us there, so it felt like this was the perfect way to honor each business.”

Each piece includes a personal connection or story behind it in Gullery's life. Whether it is her favorite date spot, hair salon, or ice cream shop, each place has positively impacted her life in Indianapolis. "I hope that viewers will see the beauty in the diversity of all the small businesses that make up our city. I hope they feel the urge to look at each location and find their personal favorites, reminisce on memories in some of the locations, and be reminded of the businesses that make our city a great place to live."
