Liminal Wonder
Liminal Wonder by Liz Nelson is about noticing the joy and beauty that comes from the in-between and from the mundane.
When leaning in this direction for her new work, Nelson noticed the vague settling in, cracks in concrete, shapes of buildings, linework - the everyday, overlooked wonders that surround us. With this in mind, Nelson continued to explore the use of sculptural elements within her work, such as twine, wire, and string. Those familiar with her work will know that Nelson frequently paints on wood. She continues to do so in this exhibition, but she also has works on canvas, which she says, "is to explore the elements, between working on canvases."
Nelson's work typically features bright colors and visual motifs such as lines, circles, and spaces. However, in this exhibition, Nelson strays from the vibrancy of past works, embracing the tones of the natural world and the world around us. "Certain colors started working for me at that time. There was a lot of work that is abstract and how something makes you feel and think; apply color in terms of feeling, and it excited me at the moment."
That is the heart of this show—"excited me at the moment." Nelson invites viewers to pause and not take the mundane for granted. Contemplate. Notice the world. There is so much to engage with and so much to make you wonder.
