Meet Caroline

Hi! My name is Caroline Otto. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, but am currently in Omaha, Nebraska. I just graduated in May from Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, where I studied 2D Art with minors in Art History and Music. I also had the incredible opportunity to study painting, drawing, and art history for a semester in the beautiful Aix-en-Provence, France.

I am primarily a printmaker, but I also enjoy explorations in watercolor and oil painting. I am motivated by the iterative and cyclical process of reduction printmaking, and how, on a large scale, it becomes an embodied, tactile, physical experience. Working with color both intuitively and methodically, my art-making is driven by creating order from disorder, by searching for patterns in nature, and by the delight of vibrant energies that emerge through layering large planes of color. Transcendence through art is compelling to me – how physical art forms can point to invisible realities, and those transcendent experiences then return us to the material world. As a jazz pianist, music has been a source of inspiration for me from a young age, and I am fascinated by how our senses of sight and sound inform each other.

I discovered the Harrison Center through my art professors at Covenant, and my interest grew through conversations with past interns who worked on the Envelope Project. I am grateful to have the same opportunity to make prints for the Envelope Project this summer! This is my first time in Indianapolis, so I am excited to explore the city and meet the people who make this community thrive. The process of artmaking brings people together and gives us space to share our stories, so I can't wait to continue making art and learning alongside other artists at this unique place!
