Memories from Kenya
Have you ever been enthralled by a place so strikingly beautiful you wanted to share it with others? Memories from Kenya is the culmination of Myrta Pulliam's experience of that and her love for capturing, through lens and paint, the scenery, wildlife, and people that call Kenya home.
While Pulliam's first trip to Africa was in the 90s, her passion for the continent has only grown. She has continued to visit as often as she can and now calls Sirikoi, a part of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, one of her favorite places. She shares, "I've been photographing there all along."
Photography, deeply rooted in Pulliam since her grandma gifted her first camera in childhood, is the beginning step of her artistic process. She snaps what's capturing her, determines her most compelling shots, and sets paint to canvas, bringing life back to the moments she observed.
Pulliam's gift of observation means that little stories lie beneath the surface of her pieces. Lonely male lion is one of her favorites because of this. "[The lion] took a liking to a female, but another bigger male lion came along, and this poor guy was rejected. So he sat near their love tryst." While cast away by his peers, Pulliam did the exact opposite and took special notice of him.
Myrta Pulliam's Memories from Kenya brings a piece of the world to many of us who might never get the opportunity to see it in person, and reminds us that there is beauty outside of our immediate surroundings, and it is worthy of being protected.
