October 2019: Nice Weather We're Having
Let’s Drink the Sunset in a Cup, Alicia Zanoni
The Harrison Center announces its October First Friday artist reception. On Friday, October 4, from 6 to 9pm, painter Alicia Zanoni brings her solo exhibit “Nice Weather We’re Having” to the Harrison Gallery and Gallery Annex. “Nice Weather We’re Having" is a collection of oil landscapes inspired by the idea that scenes in the natural world make us feel things and even reflect our internal emotional landscape. This can be felt in the way the ground folds back and forth, the way the sky opens up or closes in tightly under a lot of cloud layers. Likewise, each painting reflects a certain kind of weather we’re having.
In the City Gallery, see “Lasting Impressions.” Shamira Wilson creates minimal abstract work that explores textile motifs. Inspired by the African Diaspora, her work alludes to the storytelling qualities found in African American narrative textiles. With her current series, Wilson is documenting the story of the changes that are happening within the city infrastructure by using rusted metal to imprint grids onto fabric, leaving an impression reminiscent of quilts, maps, and city grids.
In Speck Gallery, David Hughes presents "The DeepLight," a composition of two-way mirrors and animated lights housed in a geometric frame (dodecahedron) run by custom rendering algorithms. An exploration in light and space creating a perception of limitless size and complexity, hidden math and science principles provide a unique foundation for the art to defy what viewers expect is possible.
In the Speck Foyer, Roche Diagnostics presents IU Health’s "CompleteLife Art Show 2019: Imagine. Inspire. Reflect. Connecting through Creativity." This exhibit features art made by patients, caregivers and team members at Indiana University Health Simon Cancer Center and IU Health University Hospital.
Photographer John Sherman presents “Looking Forward: Beauty • Pride • Defiance” in Hank & Dolly’s Gallery. "Twelve women who have had chemotherapy or who were undergoing it at the time of the photo shoot posed for me. As the title and subtitle suggest, there is a determination here, along with the idea of beauty (as women undergoing chemo, losing their hair, feel a loss of beauty sometimes), pride in their lives and in meeting challenges. Reflecting this, their bios will focus more on their careers, pets, kids, etc. and mention the cancer, but don’t allow it to define them or be the focus of their whole lives.”
In the Underground, "Ballyhoo: A Multimedia Art Extravaganza.” Ballyhoo is a group art exhibition highlighting all aspects of the bygone era of the circus and its performers. Included in the exhibition will be a selection of rare, original sideshow banners from the collection of Dr. Chris Jones. A special screening of the 1932 film “Freaks” will be shown the night of the opening courtesy of Walter Paisley Movie House.
In the Sanctuary, Harlem-based ImageNation Cinema Foundation presents a screening of “Amazing Grace.”
The work hangs through October 25.
