On April 7th, 2023, join us for First Friday! Enjoy these openings:

  1. Recuerdos de Papel by Beatriz Vasquez in the Harrison Gallery. The artist’s contemporary papel picado storytelling portrays the beauty of intercultural experiences creating collective impact through cultural memory that celebrates humanity, migration, identity, ancestral, indigenous art, and creative skills.

  2. Thinking Out Loud by Derrick Carter in the City Gallery. A series of sand and acrylic layered paintings exploring the artist’s belief that the universe is speaking to him when he looks upwards towards the sky and sees bursts of colorful morning hues.

  3. Ten Years Gone by Kristi Marsh Watson in the Gallery Annex. This collection of mixed media paintings on canvas, wood, plastic, and paper was crafted in honor of a Led Zepplin song of the same title. The work is abstract and meditative, focusing on media and substrate experimentation.

  4. Protoblade by Nick Abstract in the Speck Gallery. In this exhibition the artist’s signature geometric visual language is applied to reclaimed industrial saw blades and canvas. The works are 3D, angular, full of movement and vibrancy while providing a departure from traditional canvas painting.

  5. Misplaced Gratitude by Lindsey Lord in the Hank & Dolly’s Gallery. This exhibition featuring watercolor, acrylic, and found objects is an effort of the artist to process her anxiety surrounding consumerism, waste, and its effects on the rapidly-changing climate.

  6. Michigan Nostalgia by Eliza Mowery in the Lift Gallery. The impressionistic abstract landscape and lifestyle paintings in this body of work are an ode to Mowery’s summers in Michigan.

  7. Covariance by Phillip Lynam in the Sky Gallery. This collection of textural acrylic paintings creates pictorial space by the juxtaposition of textures and formal elements in geometric shapes and forms.

  8. INTROSPECT by Rebecca Robinson in the Underground Gallery. This new work examines the artist’s ideas, thoughts, and feelings through mixed media.
