Meet Jack
Greetings! My name is Jack Mahaffey, and I am currently a senior attending Butler University. I will be graduating this spring semester with a Major in Art and Design and a photography emphasis. Before attending Butler, I graduated from Herron High School and practiced for basketball here at the Harrison Center!
I joined the art scene in 2023, and instantly fell in love. Because I joined so recently, I have had the privilege of not sticking with one primary medium. I have worked with as many materials and methods of making art as I could get my hands on at Butler. As well as photography, I enjoy working with oil paints, graphite, charcoal, sewing, sculpture, and some graphic design. My favorite part about taking an interest in a variety of artistic media is when I can apply a method learned from one medium to another. My favorite project I have worked on thus far was helping my class set up a photoshoot with Goodfellas Pizza. I was able to get the contact card from the store manager who recruited my class to take photos in exchange for pizza.
I will use this opportunity to intern with the Harrison Center to improve my photo and film skills and learn more about how an art gallery operates. I have been blown away by the work and the organization of the Harrison Center, especially seeing First Fridays. My goal here is to make a lasting impact on the Harrison Center while also retaining new skills to have a lasting impact on myself and my art career. I am excited to continue working with the wonderful staff here and help out as much as I can!
Some more about me! As well as creating art, I love playing video games, watching scary movies/shows, listening to music, and playing kendama. Kendama is a traditional Japanese hand-eye coordination game that's been popularized with the help of EDM music. It consists of a wooden handle with three cups and a spike, and is attached to a wooden ball with a hole at the bottom with a string. Over the summer, I competed in my first kendama event and won the Beginners bracket!
