The 67th Street Printmakers will debut Printed City, an exhibition celebrating Indiana’s bicentennial in print, this month in the City Gallery at the Harrison Center for the Arts.
The 67th Street Printmakers formed as an extension of the Indianapolis Art Center’s Independent Study classes and takes it’s name from the Art Center’s location at 67th and College Avenue. A community of artists with a mutual love of the very diverse printmaking medium, the group more formally came together in early 2016.
They began by sharing their prints through exchanges with each other, but were encouraged by then-instructor Patrick Flaherty, now the Art Center’s director, to keep in touch and to show their work through exhibits. To date, this will be their fourth exhibition.
The group has grown to fourteen members, each working in their own style, with varying printmaking techniques, and all finding camaraderie in the print studio.
Printed City, according to member Lorie Lee Andrews, is inspired by, “some of our favorite places, past and present, in Indianapolis.”
Co-director Lisa VanMeter says of her work focusing on Monument Circle and specifically the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, “I have always loved walking around the Circle: the Monument is quite powerful and I’m proud that our city pays tribute to our veterans with such focus and grace. I just hope my print does it justice!”
The August exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about this diverse genre of print making as well. The word print can be confusing: often thought of in terms of a copy of an original work. As professional printmakers who produce beautiful etchings, woodblocks, monoprints, screen-prints, linocuts and lithographs, they represent each aspect of printmaking techniques.
This exhibit will hang through August 26.
