Chasing the Muse: Inside Spay's Latest Show |
In her latest show, Pursuit of the Muse, painter Stephanie Spay embarks on a journey she invites viewers to join, seeking inspiration. Her impressionistic style perfectly blends her intentionally substantial brushstrokes with the soft yet vibrant color palettes in each piece, while still drawing attention to the ever-fleeting "muse" in each piece.
This show is a collection of oil paintings; some portraits, others still life. While these pieces focus on different subjects, they all ask the same question: "What does it mean to have a muse?" Spay is ever faithful to the external influences behind each piece, often centered on seemingly ordinary moments: in the middle of the day with family or during work around the house.

Find Freedom in Stories from a Kite Runner |
This immersive exhibition celebrates the beauty, resilience, and rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan through a collection of paintings and handmade kites by Afghan artist Qahar Behzad. Handcrafted from delicate tissue paper and repurposed materials, the soaring kites represent Qahar’s experiences as a kite-runner, and honor a cherished Afghan tradition that has long represented artistry, playfulness, and community.
In recent years, this pastime has become a symbol of resilience. Under Taliban rule, recreational activities including kite-flying have been banned, but people have continued to fly kites as an act of hope and resistance - sometimes launching them at night with candles attached before cutting them free, allowing them to fly beyond the reach of those seeking to silence them.

"I'm currently a junior at Herron High School, and have recently taken on the roles of stage manager and historian for our fall production of Urinetown, and the Hair and Makeup Designer for the Thespian All-State show, Middletown. Even though I haven't made it to nearly as many First Fridays as I'd like, the Harrison Center has been forming my love of art since before I could walk."

This First Friday, we had the lovely opportunity to hear the live album Cardinal performed for the first time by music intern Sophia Swain.
"Cardinal is an album I've worked on since starting my internship at the Harrison Center in March. I started writing about history, like people and railroads, but as I got more chances to meet people and go to community events, it evolved into something much more personal.
This album is about more than just our state bird. It's a combination of the stories that make up Indianapolis and my experiences, and how they, along with the time I spent at the Harrison Center, helped me find my place here. From having songs about the weeds growing down 16th street to figuring out what Indy means to me–Cardinal is something I hope will help people realize what made their community, and how they can fit in something much bigger than themselves."
