Unwind and Reflect With Taoist Composition |
In Ting Waddles' latest body of work, titled Taoist Composition, she creates a new body of abstract, sculptural pieces that offer viewers insight into her unique artistic and philosophical practice.
Each piece in Waddles' show is uniquely sculptural; some paintings aren't quite paintings, with three-dimensional elements that seep out towards the viewer. One concept that Waddles values in the practice of Taoist philosophy is Wu wei 無為, described as "Non-doing, inaction." This concept emphasizes balance in how we go through life, avoiding extremes.
Come and meditate on this contemplative body of work that invites us in and serves as an oasis from the busyness of this life. Online Gallery | Blog |
Celebrate Spring in RESURRECTION BLOOMS |
In Hank & Dolly's Gallery, spring has arrived with the opening of Carolyn Springer's show, RESURRECTION BLOOMS. This collection of encaustic floral paintings includes Springer's most recent paintings as well as older works that she has returned to and given new life.
While Springer has worked in many mediums, from oil paint to metal, she has found that encaustic painting is her favorite. Her work begins by heating pigmented wax on a hot palette and then applying it to wood panels to create uniquely textured surfaces.
"This body of work shows my love for Spring and the rebirth that is present in the world around us as well as the metaphors this season brings," says Springer. "I use wax to paint the ephemeral change of the season–depicting life emerging from underground and flowers beginning to bloom."

| Meet 48-Hour Resident, Miriam |
"Miriam McAuley is an artist who primarily works in fabric painting and drawing. Having lived most of her life in Africa, she draws inspiration from the colors, patterns, and cultures she’s had the privilege to live in.
During her 48-hour residency at the Harrison Center, Miriam enjoyed getting a glimpse of some of the community and story-based projects that the center is involved in, as they honor and uplift the community. It gave her a boost of inspiration to keep pursuing her artistic goals and dreams as she heads back to her own studio, as well as some new ideas of how to invite others into art making."

Travel to Paris with Pascal and Miss Pearl |
Last summer, musician Pascal Glock did an eight-week songwriting residency at the Harrison Center. The songs were focused on the people, life, and culture of Martindale-Brightwood, inspired by time spent with the network of Greatriarchs, who are living witnesses to the neighborhood's identity.
Bringing the songs back with him to France, Pascal launched a three day Martindale-Brightwood: Live in Paris festival and started a "Miss Pearl Mass Choir" of fifteen choristers and musicians. Pascal Glock and the Miss Pearl Mass Choir will be the main act performing at an open mic on the 24th of April in Paris.
The live album is coming out soon. And yes, there is a life-size cutout of Miss Pearl touring the different sights of Paris. Martindale-Brightwood: Shine bright!
